VICTORY - The Northeast Christian Conference Center held its first ever open house June 20.
Some neighbors, and members of the Victory Town Board and Planning Board attended.
“I think people now have a better idea of what we are and what we’re about,” said Gary Fenn, a member of the local board of directors for the conference center.
The center is hoping to expand in the future, adding 15 more cabins in the first phase. There is a discussion about the expansion scheduled at a special meeting of the Cayuga County Planning Board June 25. The center had to submit a 25-year-plan to the board, which Fenn said has already been done.
The Victory Town Board is also expected to discuss the project at a future meeting.
Fenn said if all goes well, they would like to add 45 more cabins eventually and move the campgrounds outward and add a new recreational facility.
The center is also planning to renovate a building to be the caretaker’s house. Almost everything is built and maintained by volunteers who are members of the church.
According to Fenn, their attendance has doubled in the past 12 years.
Visitors got to view the dormitories, recreational facility, private campgrounds and the meeting hall.
The conference center also hosted a youth conference at the same time as the open house. While some kids sang or played volleyball inside, others played outside in the fields and playgrounds, despite the rainy weather.
The Northeast Christian Conference Center is a meeting place and religious retreat for eight churches in North America.
The conference center is part of the Brunstad Christian Church, an evangelical, non-denominational church that uses the Bible as the basis and guideline for life and teaching. The church is headquartered in Norway, where it was founded after World War I.
