District: Student Brought Gun to School
Tuesday, June 23 2009
HANNIBAL - A boy accused of bringing an unloaded handgun to Kenney Middle School has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon. The gun belonged to the boy’s stepfather. The case will be handled in Family Court; the boy was released to his mother. He may also face school disciplinary proceedings. A press release issued by Superintendent of Schools Michael DeFabio June 22 indicated a middle school student boarded a bus during the first morning run June 19 with a concealed unloaded handgun. He showed the gun to two other students on the bus. At 8:30 a.m., the student who possessed the handgun was signed out of school by a parent for an appointment. This student left school grounds accompanied by the parent. Meanwhile, one of the students who was shown the handgun on the bus mentioned this to their peers. This student was encouraged to go and tell an adult, and the student did so. The information was turned over to the administration, who immediately contacted the state police in Fulton to provide information and assist in the investigation. Initially, district officials believed the handgun was actually a pellet pistol, but it was later determined that the handgun was a working pistol, but it was not loaded.
