Phelps Brings Down the House

WEEDSPORT - It was an explosive night of racing Sunday at Cayuga County Fair Speedway as the World Famous Trailer Race left a path of destruction around the 3/8 mile track. Jimmy Phelps aboard the #99j kept Matt Sheppard and Cousin Ryan Phelps wanting more in the 35-lap feature as he sailed into victory lane for the second time this season. All 26 cars entered into Sunday’s Big Block division made it to the big dance as Eric Fisher led the field to green flag racing. From the start, it seemed Fisher favored the outside groove as he held off the advances of rookie Big Block driver Timmy Currier currently running in second. A caution brought out in lap 8 gave Jeff Brownell Jr., currently running in fourth, the opportunity he was looking for as he jumped two spots instantly at the restart. Brownell couldn’t be slowed down as the car continued to pick up speed with every circuit completed around the track. Two laps later, Brownell would silence Fisher once and for all as the #29 Xtreme Lubricants ride assumed the lead position. As Brownell began separating himself from the field, Ryan and Jimmy Phelps began tracking down the leader. Halfway through the feature, Brownell found himself weaving in and out of traffic as the Phelps duo looked to gain some ground on the leader. By lap 24, “the Rocket” Phelps was knocking on the back door of Brownell with cousin Jimmy inches behind. Seconds later, the trio found themselves rubbing paint going into the front straightaway with Brownell getting the brunt of the punishment. With a rear flat tire, the Xtreme Lubricants #29 would say goodbye to the top spot as Jimmy Phelps came out on top. As the field regrouped Matt Sheppard, Steve Paine, and Alan Johnson concluded the Top Five with ten laps to go. Despite the heavy hitters lining up behind the #99j, Jimmy Phelps wasn’t about to be slowed down as he ricocheted around the ring, cruising into victory lane by nights end. Top Five: Jimmy Phelps, Matt Sheppard, Ryan Phelps, Steve Paine, and Alan Johnson.
