NEWARK - Walter H. Safford, 88, of Murray Street, died June 20, 2009 at Newark-Wayne Hospital.
Friends called June 22 at Schulz-Pusateri Funeral Home, 103 Maple Court, Newark. Funeral services where held June 23 at the funeral home with the Rev. Carlos Smith. Burial in Newark Cemetery with full military rites accorded. The VFW and American Legion had visitation on June 22. Memorials to the Palliative Care Room at Newark-Wayne Hospital.
Walt was born in Owls Head, N.Y. April 20, 1921, son of Frank and Gladys Lester Safford. He was a truck driver all his life and was a member of the Teamster’s local. He had driven in his earlier years for Bero Construction in Waterloo. He served in the Army in World War II and in the European Theatre. He was a life member of the VFW and the American Legion of Newark.
Walter has seen five generations three times in his life. He was a devoted husband of 31 years to Grace DeCann Safford, also the “10 kids,” Walter’s seven children: Beverly of Canandaigua, Terry of Newark, Steven (Sue), Gail (Barb) of Newark, Charlene Volpe (Carlos) of North Bangor, Sandra of Lyons, Brian (Becky) of Newark; Grace’s three children Phillip DeCann (Marilyn) of Oroville, Calif., Sally (Dave) Long of Half Moon Bay, Calif. and Randy (Janet) DeCann of Oroville, Calif; several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, Nephew Skip and Marlene Ebert of Wisconsin.
He was predeceased by his former wife, Clarissa Wood Safford.
