Indoor Track on a Run at Red Creek

RED CREEK –The first season of Red Creek indoor track has given athletes a new alternative to stay active this winter. “It’s a great thing, because not everyone is a basketball player or a wrestler,” said Coach David Briggs. He has coached outdoor track the past five years, and this upcoming cross country season will be his fourth. Despite other Red Creek winter sports battling low participation numbers, there are about 40 athletes on the indoor track roster. The whole team, not just a select few, compete at every meet. Also, instead of just facing Wayne County opponents, like in other sports, the meets include every Section V team. “The kids are seeing good competition every week,” said Briggs. “These teams are the best of the best.” According to Briggs, Red Creek has had quite a few standouts this year. In particular he named distance runners senior Aaron Markowski and junior Morgan Mayo. He also mentioned senior Ryan Gould and freshman Lydia Cooper in the long jump. “I could name the whole squad,” said Briggs. He also predicted about a handful of the lineup to make sectionals. “The jitters are out, they are meeting the standards, and qualifying for sectionals,” said Briggs.
