RED CREEK - The Wolcott Elks Lodge hosted the annual Elks Hoop Shoot for the West Central District of the New York State Elks Association. The “Hoop Shoot” is a basketball free throw shooting contest for boys and girls divided into three age groups, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. The West Central district is comprised of seven Elk Lodges in New York: Rochester, Lyons, Seneca Falls, Newark, Wolcott, Canandaigua and Webster-Fairport.
Children from as far away as West Bloomfield came to Red Creek for this exciting contest. Each contestant had already competed and won at the local Lodge level competition. Now the competition is at a higher level. Each contestant shot 25 free throws to see who would move on to the next level “Regional” competition.  After shooting 25 shots any ties would be decided by an additional five shots.  In the girl’s age group 8-9 there was a tie which took four rounds of shoot offs to decide the tie breaker.
A crowd of about 80 parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters watched and cheered as each took their shots hoping to make it.
After the shooting event at Red Creek Central School, the activities moved on to the Wolcott Elks Lodge where everyone was treated to pizza and soda. Awards and certificates were handed out to all participants. The winners now go to Olean, NY for the Regional contest which will be followed by the State contest held at Liverpool, NY then onto the National contest held at Springfield, Mass. Moving on from Wolcott Elks Lodge are Dorthee Grant and Ethan Durocher, both students at Red Creek. We wish good luck to both.
The Hoop Shoot is just one of many activities the Elks sponsor across the nation.
