Buerkle Wins GOP Endorsement; No Decision in State Sen. 49th
Tuesday, March 9 2010
SYRACUSE - The Republicans are lining up candidates to challenge two Democratic area representatives in the fall Republican Ann Marie Buerkle of Onondaga Hill, will face incumbent Congressman Dan Maffei of Syracuse in November. She will be on the GOP and Conservative lines, after winning endorsements from both parties. The district covers northern Cayuga and all of Wayne County, in addition to all of Onondaga an a slice of eastern Monroe. Her opponents in the caucuses, Lysander businessman Mark Bitz, said he would not challenge her in a primary. Paul Bertan, of Camillus, another potential opponent, dropped out of the race and endorsed Buerkle and it also appears that retired teacher Mario Paolini, of Fabius, also will not push a primary. Buerkle is a former Syracuse common councilor. She is a registered nurse and an attorney, currentlyon leave from the state Attorney General’s office. In the 49th state Senate District, it appears that Fayetteville pianist and LeMoyne College professor Andrew Russo won the designating caucus, although East Syracuse Mayor Dan Liedka is also claiming victory after the March 4 meeting. John DeSpirito III, chairman of the Onondaga County Republican Committee he and Republican committee leaders from Madison and Cayuga counties will meet to discuss the results of the votes. The 49th District, represented by Democratic Sen. David Valesky, includes all of Madison County and parts of Onondaga, Oneida and Cayuga counties. The Oneida County Republican Committee won’t choose a designee until April 12, but it likely won’t make a difference. That county comprises only a tiny portion of the district. Russo beat Dan Liedka by about 10 percentage points among votes cast by Onondaga and Cayuga county GOP committee members. Liedka took Madison County.
