Investigation into Fatal Fire Closed

PORT BYRON - Sheriff David Gould reports that The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has closed the investigation into the fatal house fire which took the life of 68 year old Gerard A. Inman at 8 First Hill Dr. in the Village of Port Byron on Feb. 15.
The investigation was conducted by the sheriff’s office, The Cayuga County Fire Investigation Team and a New York State fire investigator. The investigation coupled with the autopsy report from the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined that Inman died of smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is officially listed as “undetermined” however all indications point to a cigarette as being the source of ignition. There are no indications that the fire was intentionally set.
