AUBURN - The Cayuga County Republican Committee  has endorsed County Sheriff Dave Gould, who ran as the Democratic candidate four years ago, for reelection.
Gould said he would also seek the nomination of the Democratic, Independence and Conservative parties.  Four years ago, he ran against then-county Sheriff Rob Outhouse on the Democratic line after the GOP endorsed Outhouse. Gould, a retired state police investigator, won the general election by a wide margin against the incumbent.
County Democratic Chairwoman Katie Lacey said there doesn’t seem to be opposition to endorsing Gould, citing high job satisfaction. She said she would support him and knew of no Democrat interested in running.
Gould has said he’s tried to take politics out of the office since he was elected, calling himself an administrator, not a politician.
Democrats will likely endorse local, state and federal candidates in May, Lacey said.
At Wednesday’s nominating meeting, county Republicans also endorsed the following federal and state candidates, according to a party official:
Richard Hanna for the 25th Congressional District, Mark Bitz for the 25th Congressional District, Andrew Russo for the 49th State Senate District, incumbent Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, for the 54h State Senate District, and Assembly incumbents Gary Finch, Brian Kolb and Robert Oaks for the 123rd, 129th and 128th Assembly districts. Bitz, who won Cayuga by one vote, has dropped out of the race.
